Una primizia di Sofonisba Anguissola
The discovery of a new painting by Sofonisba Anguissola offers the opportunity to shed some light on her early work and, then, to consider her in the context of the Cremonese artistic culture between 1540s and 1550s. The aim is, on the one hand, to go beyond the celebration of Sofonisba only as a “lady painter”, and, on the other hand, to demonstrate that, at the beginning of her career, she was mainly influenced by Camillo Boccaccino and Antonio Campi, and not only by Bernardino Campi and Bernardino Gatti, with whom she studied. Thanks to this new perspective, it is now possible to cautiously refer to Sofonisba a painting in the church of S. Barbara in Mantua, previously attributed to Antonio Campi.
