Alessandro Tiarini nella chiesa dell’Annunziatella a Roma. Nuovi documenti sull’Estasi di san Luigi Gonzaga

The current state of studies on the Ecstasy of St. Luigi Gonzaga, located in the Church of the Annunziatella in Rome, reveals differing opinions among scholars regarding the attribution and period of execution. A number of unpublished documents found in the Municipal Historical Archive of Novellara add new information on both the origin of the artwork, reconstructing the events that led to its arrival in Rome, and its authorship, confirming Angelo Mazza’s and Daniele Benati’s assertion that it was attributed to the Bolognese artist Alessandro Tiarini (1577-1668).
The same documents also shed light on the possible destination of the altarpiece, the new Jesuit church in Novellara, whose construction project, carried out at the end of the 17th century under the rule of Count Camillo III Gonzaga (1649-1727), was already linked to the name of his father Alfonso II (1616-1678).
