La dialettica della «quarta dimensione» in pittura tra Futurismo e Cubismo
The «Fourth Dimension» is one of the theoretical flagships of Cubism. This establishment was born in 1911 like a quotation from Bergson, and evolved in 1912 (through Apollinaire) to a very different meaning referred to the mathematical theories dealing with further dimensions, leading to the complexity of Orphic Cubism.
This new way was actually taken from Futurist theories, particularly those applied by Boccioni in the Stati d’animo series (1911), immediately well known by Apollinaire. For his part, Boccioni was influenced by Giacomo Balla, who deeply studied this subject that since many years was illustrated by his friend (and President of the Roman Theosophical Society) Carlo Ballatore. The «Fourth Dimension» in art, that still recently was considered a Cubist goal, is on the contrary a wholly Futurist intuition.
