«Los papas son 253. el año 1771»: Francisco de Goya e l’elenco dei sommi pontefici
Francisco de Goya’s Cuaderno italiano that is preserved at the Museo Nacional del Prado of Madrid is one of the few means for our knowledge of the young painter’s training in Italy (1769-1771). This important source, which still requires a proper interpretation, starts with an enigmatic phrase referring to the number of popes reigning until the 1771. In this article we will first focus on the possible source, where the young artist studying in Rome could consult the official list of popes; then, we will investigate the reasons that brought Goya to insert such a list as the incipit of his Taccuino.
